How ResumeUX Works: Free AI Tools, Resume Builder & Why We Use Open-Source APIs
· 10 min read
ResumeUX is a free, AI-powered resume platform built on open-source models and free API tiers. Every tool, from the Resume Engine to the ATS Scanner and Cover Letter Writer, is designed to give you a professional edge without charging a cent. This article explains exactly how each tool works, why you might occasionally see downtime, why you should always edit your final resume, and provides a free keyword bank you can use immediately.
The Resume Engine: where everything starts
The Resume Engine is the core builder. You start with a blank template or import an existing PDF or DOCX. The engine breaks your resume into structured sections, Contact, Summary, Experience, Education, Skills, Projects, Certifications, Tools, and Additional, so every field maps cleanly to what an ATS expects.
You move through ten steps: Contacts, Summary, Experience, Education, Skills, Tools, Projects, Additional, Template selection, and Finalize. At every step you see a live preview that updates as you type. The final step lets you export to PDF or DOCX, no account, no watermark, no credit card.
The Resume Engine is intentionally modular. You can save your progress, switch templates without retyping, and revisit any section at any time. Every resume you build is stored in your account so you can iterate, clone, or version it later.
The AI Career Tools: standalone, one-click power
Beyond the builder, ResumeUX ships four standalone AI tools, each with its own workspace so you never lose context jumping between tasks.
The ATS Scanner scores your resume against any job description. Upload a PDF, paste a DOCX, paste raw text, or pick a saved resume. The AI structures your content, scores it across seven dimensions (formatting, keywords, skills, experience, education, ATS compatibility, achievements), and tells you exactly which keywords you are missing.
The Cover Letter Writer turns your resume into a tailored, recruiter-ready letter in seconds. Add the company name and job description for a letter written to the role, not a generic template.
The LinkedIn Writer generates an optimized About section and three headline options packed with recruiter-search keywords, all drawn from your real experience.
The Interview Prep tool generates likely questions, behavioral, technical, and resume-deep-dive, each with a coaching tip on how to answer well.
Why we use free, open-source APIs
ResumeUX runs on OpenRouter, a unified API that connects to hundreds of open-source models. We specifically use the free-tier variants, models like DeepSeek Chat, Meta Llama 3.3, Qwen, and Mistral, so the platform stays completely free for you.
Because these are free tiers, they come with rate limits. When demand spikes, a model may temporarily return a 429 (rate limit) or 503 (unavailable) error. Our system handles this automatically: we maintain a rotating list of the top 15 free models, and if one is exhausted, we instantly switch to the next. If all fifteen are unavailable at the same time, you will see a message saying Our Models Are Exhausted. Try Again In Sometime.
This is not a bug. It is the trade-off of running on zero-cost infrastructure. We believe free access to AI career tools is more important than perfect uptime, and we are transparent about it. If you see downtime, wait a minute or two and try again. The rotation will have found an available model.
Why you must edit your final resume
AI is a powerful assistant, but it is not you. The Resume Engine and the AI tools generate strong first drafts, not finished products. You must read, verify, and edit every line before you submit it to an employer.
Why? Because the AI does not know your personal voice, your exact responsibilities, or the nuanced way you describe your work. It may inflate a responsibility into an achievement, or phrase something in a way that sounds impressive but feels inauthentic in an interview. Recruiters can spot generic AI copy instantly.
More importantly, you need to know what is in your resume cold. In an interview, you will be asked to expand on every bullet. If you do not recognize a phrasing or cannot speak to a metric, you will look unprepared. Own your resume. Use the AI to accelerate the draft, then make it yours.
Tools are guidance, not gospel
The ATS Scanner gives you a score and a keyword list. Treat it as a directional guide, not a guarantee. ATS software varies wildly between companies. Some use basic keyword matching; others use semantic NLP. The score is a strong signal, not a promise.
The Cover Letter Writer produces a tailored draft. It will match your experience to the job description, but you should refine the tone, add personal touches, and remove anything that does not sound like you. A cover letter that reads like a robot wrote it is worse than no cover letter at all.
The LinkedIn Writer gives you headlines and an About section optimized for search. Again, edit them. Your LinkedIn is a living profile, not a static document. Update it regularly and make sure it reflects your current goals.
The Interview Prep questions are educated guesses based on your resume and the job description. Use them to practice, but do not memorize rote answers. Be ready to improvise, tell stories, and connect your experience to the company's mission.

Free cover letter keywords bank
A strong cover letter bridges your resume and the job description. It should reference the company name, the role, and 3 to 5 specific keywords from the posting. Use these phrases as structural anchors, then fill in your own details.

How to use this keyword bank
Copy the keywords that honestly reflect your skills and paste them into the relevant sections of your resume. Do not keyword-stuff. An ATS may flag unnatural density, and a recruiter will definitely notice. Aim for 8 to 15 hard skills, 5 to 10 soft skills, and role-specific tools scattered naturally through your summary, experience bullets, and skills section.
After inserting keywords, run the ResumeUX ATS Scanner. It will cross-reference your resume against the job description and tell you which keywords you are still missing. Add the ones you genuinely have, then scan again. Repeat until your score is above 75 for a strong shot at the shortlist.
Final thoughts: own your career narrative
ResumeUX gives you the tools to build faster, score smarter, and apply stronger. But the story is yours. The AI accelerates the draft. The scanner sharpens the keywords. The cover letter and LinkedIn tools extend your reach. None of them replace your judgment, your voice, or your ownership of the final document.
Use the tools. Edit the output. Know every line. And when you land the interview, walk in confident because you wrote every word.
Put this into practice, free.
